WHAT I EAT in a Day - Do I Do CHEAT DAY - Carnie Food FTW!
Trki, Kody, Cheaty do
One of Abbey's favorite summer traditions is going to the Carnival. In this episode of Abbeys' Kitchen she does just that and takes you along for the ride. Abbey describes the Carnival as "Christmas on Crack", which is hilariously on point with what a typical Carnival really is. It's your once a year opportunity to try as many outrageous foods as the Carnival has to offer, and you won't find a shortage. Some people have referred to a trip to the Carnival as the "Ultimate Cheat Day". This is something Abbey really takes an issue with. The concept of a cheat day implies that you have to stick with some sort of highly regimented diet that requires you to give up foods you love to eat that in all reality are not bad for your body when consumed in moderation. When you take the perspective that any day you eat something like ice cream, or a piece of cake, it's a cheat day you create a cycle of binging followed by deprivation. It's like a food roller coaster that you force yourself to ride when you could just be eating a healthy, balanced diet and enjoying the foods you love. It's not only a frustrating way to go about eating food it's actually not at all good for your body. After hitting some rides Abbey finds her way to a food vendor and orders up a "Chimney Stacks". In case you aren't familiar with this carnie food it's a doughnut cone filled with frozen yogurt, bacon bits, and maple syrup. If the footage in this video is any indicator at all Abbey definitely enjoyed her find. She had never had this particular carnie food before so it was definitely a real treat. After her tasty snack Abbey imparts a bit of carnie wisdom to all the people out there enjoying the deliciousness that is carnie food. Sharing is caring. Do not make the mistake of thinking you can go around the Carnival trying every decadent morsel you find at the food vendor stands. You will end up finding yourself full beyond belief and most likely end up with a stomach ache like no other. Bring a friend or two with you and be sure to share that carnie food. The whole idea behind a trip to the Carnival is to have that magical once a year carnival experience, not walk away feeling bloated and over stuffed. Abbey goes back for some more Carnival games and seems elated to have won a stuffed animal before she finds another carnie food gem. She finds a vendor selling what she says she's been waiting all day for, a pulled pork and bacon topped cinnamon bun. After a taste it gets the Abbey seal of approval and she moves on to a bag of Tiny Tom's Donuts. According to Abbey Tiny Tom's Donuts is an absolute must have food every time she's at the Carnival. It is not optional to skip it for any reason and this time certainly wasn't an exception. These are smaller doughnuts covered in what looks like powdered sugar and of course, deep fried. After consuming all the deep fried, pork and bacon covered sugary goodness that she had that day Abbey's body was screaming for some fruits and vegetables and she was listening. She heads over to another vendor and finds a great looking healthy wrap loaded with vegetables. The beauty of escaping from the cheat day mentality is that instead of having one day where you put nothing in your body except for so-called "cheat foods" you listen to your body and when it tells you it's time for some real food you eat it. Your body will tell you exactly what it needs if you just take the time to listen. After putting some real food into her body Abbey decides to go for a rainbow grilled cheese sandwich. This looks like a regular grilled cheese, only larger, and completely overloaded with the same type of sprinkles you would see on a doughnut. She even goes so far as to refer to it as a "Unicorn of a Grilled Cheese Sandwich". She seems ecstatic about getting her hands on it and wastes no time enjoying another fantastic carnie food snack. After a long day at the Carnival Abbey takes one last ride and decides to call it quits, mentioning that she'll probably be having a salad for dinner. If you have any tips or nuggets of wisdom you'd like to share about going to the Carnival, and eating carnie food all day, don't be shy. Leave a comment below, Abbey would love to hear from you. Absolutely love the CNE! However this year I wasn't too excited about any of the foods so I passed. I agree with your approach to balanced eating!!
-
So not a fan of the term "cheat days"! Since when is indulging in good food "cheating"? It's all about listening to your body and finding your balance! PS my stomach is now officially grumbling...

Great video once again!

I totally agree! Cheat day doesn't work for me. I'd rather eat well and have a treat now and then without doing a whole day.
I'm totally hungry now for some of those treats! -
Great video. Love your thoughts on cheat day. I don't like the term either. I'm not a big carny fan but I do love me some Disney World yummies when we go.
-
Yay for no cheat days!! I'm with you!

I completely agree with your thoughts about a "cheat day". Fun watching you explore and taste all those unique eats - especially that Unicorn Grilled Cheese. : )

So fun! Love that you know how to have fun and know how to still listen to your body at the same time - that's what we should all be doing!

We are locals! NICE!

Loved this..."no more sugar si'l vous plait"! My body is telling me the same thing right now. Cotton candy in my case.

This was adorable. I know when I was on a weight loss regimen I used the 80/20 rule each week. 80% of my meals (so out of 21 main meals a week, that would be about 17) would be right on track, exactly what I planned. Then 4 out of the 21 (so 20%) of the main meals would be not as 'on track'. This provided me the freedom to still have a social life if I wanted to, forget my lunch at home, and enjoy brunch on the weekend, without hating myself. And I have to say this worked (for me), because after a while I didn't even have to think about the ratio. I knew if I was asked to go out on the weekend for dinner, or was invited to a work lunch, I had space in my weight loss plan to enjoy those moments. I don't think cheat day works, but I do think allowing yourself to enjoy the foods you want is what makes the difference between successful, long term weight loss and rebound weight gain. And tbh I still use the 80/20 rule now, and I've kept the weight off for more than 6 years.
