Medieval2 Total War Merchant Tip

Just a tip on how to get a merchant leveled up quickly at the beginning of a game. He will make quite a lot of money before he's acquired by some other merchant unless you watch out for him and begin really using him after he reaches about level 5 or 6.

Could have sent a General their along with a single unit. "cheap one" Put up a Fort on the crossing area. Tada no Merchants are going to be able to get there.

(DISCLAIMER: This video is inaccurate) WrinkledHound? do you have a quicker way to explain your tips? j/k Placing merchants in this area will NOT level up your merchant any quicker than any other tradable location on the map. What WrinkeldHound does reveal in this video is an area where tradable goods are more valuable than other locations (a good tip in itself and so this video showcases where at least one of those areas are). There are about 6 areas you can find on the grand campaign map that are similar to the area described in this video, however the location revealed in this video is the FIRST place to go once you have a level 4 merchant. The second location I goto is located near Istanbul (that choke point and gateway to the black sea has approx. 5 locations that produce 400-1000 florin per turn). Next is a secret area in North Central Africa (modern day N. Algeria it takes about 15 turn to get too but very profitable, send 3 merchants at once) Another one is located in Egypt, the high value locations seem to be where pyramids would be found on a modern map and can produce up to 1000 florin/turn.) One last area on the campaign map is just South of the passage leading from Spain to the western coast of Africa, you can follow the coast line down to a secret location. All of these areas will be frequented by level 4 merchants by turn 15 so you better level your merchants up before sending them to those areas. I also believe you can find locations in America if you can find it. When it is discovered that the "World is Round" that is the trigger that allows you to sail west from Spain using a fleet of Carrack's. You want to head west from Spain and you will eventually land somewhere near Florida.

Have you notices 3 years have passed between save 2 and 3 (1112AD>1116AD) and the merchant only aged by 1 year (33>34).

A quicker way to level up your merchants is by having them travel to the major trade nodes via boat (the Italian peninsula, etc.); once there, try to take over other merchants, you might gain the commercial conqueror perk. I would recommend saving before you try to take over an enemy merchant. Once your merchants are sufficiently leveled, send them to the ivory coast, so they can trade in the precious resources there. Early game, you won't find any competition in that part of Africa.
