Psychologist Jonathan Haidt studies the five moral values that form the basis of our political choices, whether we're left, right or center. In this eye-opening talk, he pinpoints the moral values that liberals and conservatives tend to honor most.

I'm 30 sec in. I suspect this guy's a liberal.
-
it is nice to see a liberal not demonizing anyone who disagrees with them.

After hearing your intro, I almost clicked away because the conservatives you described bore no resemblance to anyone I know. I thought this video would be simply one more liberal bashing conservatives.
I'm glad I stayed to listen, however, and was pleasantly surprised at the turn you made.
Thank you for showing that the "yin & yang" of things is what we need. -

He lost me at "Animals get together in groups, but they are either very small or they are siblings". He's ignoring giant herds of animals, giant flocks of birds, massive schools of fish etc. Some herds of antelope have numbered in the tens of millions. Some shoals of fish have been recorded to contain tens of millions of herring.

""Classical liberalism" is the term used to designate the ideology
advocating private property, an unhampered market economy, the rule of
law, constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and of the press,
and international peace based on free trade. Up until around 1900, this
ideology was generally known simply as liberalism."

Too bad the word "liberal" has been co-opted by big government control freaks and the absolutely lawless "lowest common denominator". A classical liberal would have a LOT in common with the Constitutional Conservative center of this country. -
So basically we are inferior to you liberals?
-
Oh man ALL these comments are great!
I don't even know wtf I 'am' anymore!
Who are 'my people'?
What group do I 'belong to'?
Just stop fighting and trying to convert everyone and talk it out without tha "You're ignorant" ... or is this me trying to convert you to my way of thinking?
Who am I?
Why is the sky green?
Why do the good always dye their hair so long? -
He is so passive aggressive
-
To think that less than a decade ago liberals were not batshit crazy...
-
expect a lot of people who call themselves liberal, they aren't which creates a lot of bad PR for "my people", think every straight white male is automatically wrong before a single word is said.

LIBERALS ARE TOTALLY FUCKED IN THE HEAD THEYRE A CANCER

I'm wondering - the graphs he's showing are a static snapshot of things as they are today. I'm wondering how those curves might have changed over time. Is there any way to look at the historical or prehistorical record and figure out if there were more pillars or fewer pillars in some cultures or during different points in our evolution.

A lot of comments on here about recent trends in leftist arguments/behaviour that seem to be strongly underpinned by "authority", "in-group" and "purity" values, perhaps to the extent that these are placed more highly than fairness or harm/care. This certainly seems to a criticism which is increasingly targeted at certain leftist groups.
I'd be interested to see some data assessing these five values across and between different leftist groups. -
Can I ask for recognition for the division between 'far left' and 'left of center'?
I'm sorry, I take full responsibility for not keepin them on a leash but they keep playin the guilt card :(
Obviously there's just not enuf to go around and sometimes ya just gotta bludgeon a hungry man to death so you can bring home the bacon... and whats bacon without eggs... ok 2 hungry bludgeoned unfortunates... and then there's the matter of toast... hrmmm
Down with anarchy!
Viva la established instituniona
Have you noticed the irony?
Who am I talking too? -
"durrr people like teams" Seriously? This is what passes for psychology these days? Nietzsche must be rolling in his grave.
-
Keep fighting the good fight, Haidt.
-
Beautiful. Thank you!

Liberals don't want anarchism. I think there's a difference between these concepts and he's not making things clear.
What is the authority/chaos that he's talking about? He's talking as if liberals didn't want law, liberals want law and believe law is essential to the world, liberals just believe in a reason-based world where everyone can do what they want with their lives as long as they don't hurt others and respect the law, and make law and justice concentrate in things that really matter, that actually affect society, not in subjective things like religious views and beliefs that shouldn't interfere with the state.
So I think what he said about not having authority leads to destruction is silly and pretty subjective and ambiguous. As I said, liberals don't want anarchism, we still believe in enforcement of the law, we just believe it should concentrate in important things.
Sorry but I don't believe those religion values that he's talking about are any good for humanity and history has proven it repeatedly, religion and these cultural traditionalist ideas do more harm than good.
And he also says that not upholding these values are a lack of values, when it's not. I believe my views are also moral values, especially based on respect, acceptance, openness to change, new ideas, and a more reasonable concept that is not so subjective or dependent on the opinion of a group, but more universal and objective. Liberal views about authority are also values.
I liked this talk and I agree with most of the other things you said, I just wanted to clear that up.
We are not the pro war people, sorry but I think you need to go back to the drawing board. Morality exists outside of religion and it's what drives my liberalism. How is willingness to work outside your race or denomination make us destructive!? That makes us inclusive. We believe in all for one and one for all not One against the other. All these great accomplishments you mentioned didn't serve the people but enslaved them to snivel at the feet of the powerful. Conservatives are products of the people in power. They will never be free because they live to serve. It could be a "Greater" purpose if the people who sought power over others did so for the right reasons and we all know they never do. We seek to liberate people to allow each to flourish to their full potential we don't elevate the self-proclaimed 'Devine' on the backs of the dim-witted peasants they believe us to be.
