Trki, Kody, Cheaty do
http://www.ted.com On any given day we're lied to from 10 to 200 times, and the clues to detect those lie can be subtle and counter-intuitive. Pamela Meyer, author of Liespotting, shows the manners and "hotspots" used by those trained to recognize deception -- and she argues honesty is a value worth preserving. Is she ever going to explain the source of why lies arise in society. Or is she just going to play hypocrite and be a servant of power?

"Fathering a child out of wedlock" ... since when has that been a crime?

I'm glad there are questioning comments about this talk as I was far from convinced. It claims a scientific method, but it then illustrates most of its points with footage of popularly known lies. And this is a problem: once we know people have lied in a given situation it's easy to look back at that communication and believe there were obvious clues to deception in that communication. Yes Clinton uses formal and distancing language about ML. Is that a clue it was a lie?? I'm not convinced it was. If Clinton had been telling the truth would the PofUSA denying sexual impropriety really have said 'No Monika didn't give me a BJ' in a press conference? I could imagine Clinton would have used v similar language to that which he did use if he had in fact been telling the truth. Similarly, Diane Downs does look odd and chilling when smiling after talking of her kids' shooting, but we know she was later found guilty. I wouldn't personally conclude that a parent who recounted a horrific event that happened to their children and smiled incongruously was lying. I'd think it out of place but no more without a lot more doubts than that. I've worked with parents in child protection cases and people's body language and verbal language often appears odd or incongruous when they're communicating under stress. It doesn't mean they are necessarily lying and indeed one thing I found was that people who were telling the truth but were worried they weren't being believed often appeared the most anxious and therefore on the face of it the most questionable. Perhaps Meyer's work is more nuanced than the TED talk allowed her to convey. But I was concerned by the presentation of it here. It seems far from scientific based on the talk.

Children learn to tell lies from studying human mind and they laugh about it. Parents and teachers show anger to them when they are caught telling lies

Sometimes I start laughing when I'm accused of something even if I've done nothing wrong!

I will qualify a truthful statement. For example, I would say "I'm not going to lie, I didn't leave a note on that parked car when I hit it." That's the truth, but I used a qualifier, so according to this lady my truthful statement would be seen as a lie
