Grit: the power of passion and perseverance | Angela Lee Duckworth
Trki, Kody, Cheaty do
Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success. She hit it square on the head in her earlier remarks. It's about motivation. Kids and young adults need to be allowed to find what motivates them so they can turn that passion into something they want to persevere for. I think that can be achieved by looking for alternatives to the government school systems. That could be home schooling, tutoring or private school. Any method where the child is able to explore their interests and be themselves. I think it's so important that people find their inner passion and are able to find that grit inside them to achieve their goals.

Great talk, I was directed here by OUA but I remember reading her paper on West Point Academy estimated retention rates when studying Benjamin Bloom's Mastery of Learning and one of his techniques included in the 5 components, that of perseverance. Grit is motivator not often measured in cognitive assessments, yet how many will excell in life because some fool told them they couldn't. I congratulate the fools, being underestimated has driven many to excel beyond the pigeon holes others would have confined them too.

Great TEDTalk from Angela Duckworth about the grit it takes to be successful in life. I included Dr. Duckworth’s quote about grit in my new book “Job Hunting Ninja Master 2017”. It covers all the subjects job hunters need to know including where to find jobs in both corporate and US government sectors; how to negotiate your salary; writing the perfect resume; and how to prepare for and successfully pass your next job interview. The research presented is a perfect example why academia is a circle jerk and often meanders in pointless researches such as this one. This presentation went in circle and actually told us nothing. Grit is defined as " courage and resolve; strength of character". Grit is just the manifestation of resolve and self-discipline, and this presentation just took this manifestation as the cause of these students succeeding. That's why the conclusion of the presentation was that nobody knows what causes grit; that's because the research studied the result and not the cause.

So I just read a comment about somebody saying how much her sister was working hard on school to get A scores and she had a health problem. So I wanted to say that this speech was not exactly addressing A in school but how we can get better, even excel, in anything we put enough GRIT on. She just used math as an example because it's something most people, are not interested in and fail. But we can succeed at it if we are determine to.
So no matter how bad we are at this point in life, it can always get better if we put enough hard work and commitment.
My personal experience is that during high school I was an average student in my class, University for me was just not challenging (not meaning easy, just very relax). So I never built a good study habit, I gave myself a challenge, which is to take the CFA exam, is hard but actually it is doable. Right now I know I am gonna fail bad, because I didn't put enough hard work, I didn't even finished to read all the course curriculum (exam in less than a week). But it's doable, I am acknowledging and owning my failure and I hope to succeed for next try, because I feel the GRIT every time I arm myself of courage to grab the curriculum and read through the difficult parts.
I know it may sound ridiculous but each person have their own struggles. Anxiety and psychological problems are the worst to address because others cannot see them.
One quote I heard from one of Lewis Howes podcast's interviewee was "I might not be were I want to be, but I thank god that I am not where I used to be" -
Nothing new... I already knew this.
